It is quite clear-cut in the recorded Scriptures that God
makes a
deliberate POINT of causing
us to become stronger than our enemies. No one who reads the
Bible can miss this truth which the Divine Author of Scripture presents
over and over again, and does so systematically and consistently. God
makes His people more powerful than their foes! Oh, He
doesn't start out with the balance of power tilted in our favor, to be
sure. He weakens the opponents (who have boasted in all their
overwhelming might) and He at the same time strengthens His little band
of faithful followers -- and then He goes in for the decisive
death-blow: He uses His small, empowered few, and brings about the
crushing defeat of the devil's empire by means of a small number of
warriors full of the power of God.
Oh, where shall we begin? Abraham was an older man, most
probably in his 80's, when he and a band of his servants took on the
four mightiest kings (who together represented what could be called a
'World Empire') and smote them and defeated all the kingdoms of the
world! This is not only a type of little Israel becoming more
powerful than the WHOLE WORLD which is aligned against God's nation;
no, it is actually more than that. For actually, what "Abraham the
Hebrew" did in Genesis 14 is a prophetic picture of what his Heir,
Jesus the Messiah, will do --- as the little Stone cut out of a
mountain without human hands, who will smite all the empires of History
in their most vulnerable spot (the feet) and crumble them into
dust! Jesus --ONE MAN -- is going to conquer (and rule) the whole
world forever! No wonder He spoke to encourage His disciples the night
before He offered Himself: "Be of good cheer: I have conquered
the world!"
Well, if Abraham was old, then David the seventeen-year-old
adolescent male was quite young when he brought down that foul-mouthed,
blaspheming, offensive, smelly, arrogant, contemptible, despicable,
uncircumcised, provocative, repulsive, insulting, filthy enemy of God,
a miserable man named Goliath, who had stymied both the King of Israel
and the whole army of Israel for forty long days! Not only did
young David 'wound this serpent in his head', as it were, but he
actually CUT OFF his head entirely; and then he put it on display so
that fear and terror would strike the hearts of evil men, and shock
waves of pain and panic would reverberate through the very caverns of
hell itself!
How much this deed turned out to be a foreshadowing of the mighty
triumph of our Christ
Jesus, Who "spoiled principalities and powers, triumphed over them in
the process, put them to an open shame, and made a public spectacle of
them"! If you're not shouting Hallelujah at this point, I scarcely
know what to say.|
